Department Insight

Civil engineering, one of the oldest branches of engineering is involved in the design and construction of public and private projects for improving society’s physical infrastructure and the environment. It integrates scientific principles with engineering experience to plan, design, and construct highways and railways, airports, bridges and dams, environmental pollution control systems, industrial structures, water purification and distribution systems, and urban transportation systems that enhance the quality of life. The curriculum:

  1. Designed to find solutions to the problems of the society in the fast changing technology.
  2. Gives students the theoretical background and professional attitude to serve the public.
  3. It typically leads to entry-level positions or to pursue post-graduation in technical specialties like environmental, geotechnical, structural, and traffic & transportation engineering.

Department of Civil Engineering was Incepted in year 2010

From HoD's Desk

Welcome to the Department of Civil Engineering! It gives me immense pleasure and pride as a civil engineer to make the department of civil engineering a preferred destination for the students who want to excel in the field and contribute to the development of the society. In the department, we aspire to mold our students to be globally competitive to meet the challenges of the technological advancement, inculcate social values and professional ethics. A well-qualified faculty, with well-equipped laboratories, are committed to provide quality teaching-learning experience and to develop every student in constructive thinking and enhancing analytical capability in collaboration with industry and research institutes. The department has externally sponsored research projects, where the faculty involve students in their research projects. The students also get an opportunity to be part of industry based curriculum for example in drone based surveying and Building Information Modelling just to name a few. Through the practical training, research projects, industrial visits, guest lectures, skill based workshops and exposure to software by means of value added courses, students are well-equipped and come out as competent civil engineers in today’s work environment. I look forward to welcoming you to the Civil Engineering programme in CHRIST (Deemed to be University).

Faclilities

Department of Civil Engineering has well established State-of-the-art
laboratory and has class leading equipments for hands on learning.

Material Testing lab

The main objective of this laboratory is to determine and measure the characteristics of materials which are used in Civil Engineering construction, starting from aggregates to steel, wood, bricks etc. This laboratory is well equipped with the equipment’s like compression testing machine, flexural testing machine, abrasion testing machine and sieve shakers. Along with the major equipment’s, few minor apparatus also well placed in laboratory to determine various types of tests on fine aggregates and coarse aggregates. This laboratory will fetch to conduct basic material testing as per the IS standards. The annual calibration and service of the laboratory equipment’s helps to get accurate results which can be used for the research purposes.

Enviromental Engineering Lab

Environmental engineering laboratory in department of civil engineering has adequate facilities and equipment’s to conduct practical classes for students of civil engineering and to carry out research activities. Laboratory is well equipped with BOD Incubator, jar test apparatus, Nephelo Turbidity meter, flame photometer, COD apparatus and spectrophotometer to analyze water and domestic wastewater for different parameters of physical, chemical and biological characteristics.

Geotechnical Engineering Lab

The laboratory is used in testing of soils, its physical, index and engineering properties. The lab is used for both academic and research purposes. The lab is comprised of all the major equipments like Pycnometers, Hydrometer Analysis, Relative Density Apparatus, Indian Standard Light and Heavy Compaction Apparatus, Field Density Apparatus, Standard Penetration Test Kit, CBR Testing Machine, Permeability Test Setup, Unconfined Compression Test Equipment, Direst Sear Test Equipment, Triaxial Test Equipment, Vane Shear Test Equipment (Small), Free Swell Test Equipment, Consolidation Test Equipment( Single Cell) which can be used to determine the most of soil properties both in filed and laboratory.

Surveying Lab

Survey lab is equipped with conventional and sophisticated instruments for 2D and 3D mapping. This lab consists of instruments like Chain, Compass, plane tables, Theodolites, Dumpy levels for basic surveying and Total Station, Hand held GPS for advanced surveying. Survey lab is useful for UG students in their regular practical courses, projects, and extensive survey projects. Calibration and service of equipment is carried out annually for accuracy and precision in measurements.

Highway Engineering Lab

This lab is equipped with standard equipments to perform tests on materials used for construction of flexible as well as rigid pavements. All the IS standard tests/MORTH standards required on the aggregates for construction of roads like abrasion, impact, crushing value, flakiness and elongation index can be conducted in this laboratory. Tests on the binder which includes softening point, viscosity, flash and fire point, penetration index and ductility can be conducted as per the standard methods. Finally, Hot mix asphalt mixing, compaction and testing as per the standards can be conducted. All these experiments can be conducted for both academic as well as research purposes.

Concrete Laboratory

The primary purpose of the Concrete Laboratory is to conduct research to develop a better, more durable, cost-effective and sustainable concrete infrastructure by Investigating and studying the behavior of concrete materials using loading frame and UTM used for Civil Engineering structures. Assessing and improving durability aspects of concrete. Developing and evaluating new test methods or enhance existing testing procedures as per the relevant IS codes. For potential Collaboration with academia and industry in advancing new emerging technologies.

CAD Laboratory

The following software’s are available in CAD Laboratory: AutoCAD, NISA-CIVIL, ETABS, Autoplotter, STAAD PRO, ANSYS. Students of 5th semester practice building drawing using Auto CAD and analysis of structures using STAAD PRO. After survey camp 6th semester BTech Civil Engineering students prepare maps using Autoplotter. Final year BTech students perform analysis using ETABS and do projects based on it. The students also performs finite element analysis using ANSYS.

Structural Dynamics Laboratory

It is a state of the art facility capable of testing 2D and 3D scaled models for dynamic loading. The equipment has a shake table capable of producing vibrations in X, Y and Z axis one at a time.It also consists of an advanced digital logical unit and data acquisition system with high precision accelerometers. Electro dynamic shake tables are capable of producing vibration of very high frequency as compared to mechanical and servo shake tables. The data acquired are of very high precision.
